Many women put off thinking about investing in home until they are partnered; thinking the dream home is where you are supposed to start. Girl Gaining Ground blows up that expectation, showing why and how buying a house as soon as you are able is the most financially important thing you can do for your future.
Girl Gaining Ground is your 50-something wise mentor that sits you down and says, " You can do this and here's how!" We help you get over your fears, ignorance, misinformation and procrastination. You can create long term home, wealth and a safety net for life.
It’s not about secret investment techniques. It’s about how you will move through the world knowing that you have a home base. This is how it works. And this is why it's important.
Girl Gaining Ground founder, Julie, has been in housing and real estate development for over 25 years. With an undergraduate degree in Architecture and a Masters degree in Urban Planning and Real Estate, Julie has had a passion for how we live and how we build stability both financially and in community....And now she's working on her PhD in housing. She teaches at the university level on real estate and housing, is a real estate broker, and loves to teach women how to invest in real estate for long-term wealth building and freedom.
But even more important than that, Julie bought her first home right out of college with only three thousand dollars and a $15 an hour job. It was a stinky, cat-infested cottage with a bright purple bathroom with holes in the wall, shiny silver peeling wallpaper and carpet in the kitchen and an overgrown yard with grass as high as the chain link fence.
A few years later, with not much more income, she used the first property to buy a second investment property and with her best friend, demolished the 1930s kitchen as therapy after a painful break up. Julie is a lifelong student of Home Depot Saturday DIY classes and a master of YouTube learning for things like installing a dimmer switch, replacing a toilet and building a kick ass deck. (It really is a freaking awesome deck! )
And maybe the most important of all, for Girl Gaining Ground credibility, Julie has been through two explosive relationship endings, both of which impacted the housing stability of her and her boys. (sigh) She has had to leave her own home due to a threatening spouse and secretly rent a home for her and her kids during a messy divorce. She had that same rental home sold out from under her and her boys as the real estate market recovered, as they were still recovering from divorce.
She bought another house, as a single mom, by talking her employer into not giving her health insurance but extra cash to increase her income so she could qualify for a mortgage, and buy a home for her and her boys a block from their school. And five years later had to quickly leave another relationship (and a home they shared) when that relationship imploded unexpectedly.
Girl, the stories she could tell! But through it all, including the Great Recession, she has stayed grounded because of her real estate investments. They were a place where she could return and heal when needed and they have grown in value while she was completely distracted by other things. This may sound unusual. But there is story after story about single women whose real estate "supported" them through a health crisis, relationship endings, family crisis and financial crisis.
We can teach you how to invest in home and build long-term wealth, no matter what life throws at you or where you start.
Girl, life can be a roller coaster.
Let's get you grounded. XOXO
